We are keenly aware of the tension between big box stores and small yarn retailers and we address how to manage competition in the book so small business owners feel less threatened by them.
Choosing Amazon was a difficult decision. The reality is that ALL the print on demand publishing options are the same beast in different clothes. Even most small imprints are “corporate” like Amazon as they are owned by “The Big Three” (Harper Collins, Penguin Random House, MacMillan). We wanted to integrate IngramSpark, which services bookstores worldwide and provides ebooks to platforms like Kobo and OverDrive (available to libraries) so we deliberately chose a publishing option through Amazon BECAUSE it would allow us to use IngramSpark later on.
Print on demand with Amazon was simply the first option to get the book into the world while we finalized broader distribution. In the coming weeks, the book will be available through other independent sellers or available from your local library via OverDrive.
In the end, given the choice between not printing a book at all or going through Amazon, we felt it was more important to get the content out there to help elevate all types of businesses in the craft industry. We hope you’ll empathize with our choice.
