Social Media and Buyer Behavior

Social Media and Buyer Behavior

Prior to the COVID- 19 outbreak and subsequent shutdowns which followed it, Stitchcraft Marketing conducted a survey of social media usage and buyer behavior to determine how social media posting and advertising affect consumer buying habits. In this post, we share one of our key findings with you as a sneak peek; to read the full report, download our free white paper when you sign up for our newsletter!

Our survey started with a simple question: where are respondents most likely to shop for their craft supplies? We saw an approximate 50/50 split between those who are more likely to shop online and those who are more likely to shop in person. Sales in person were divided 38% at a local store versus 12% at festivals or other special events.

In a pre-COVID-19 world, this data tells us that your online presence has the potential account for 50% or more of your sales in addition to your retail location (if you have one). As more events are cancelled and shelter in place orders are issued, your online presence is more important than ever.

Here are some steps to make sure you’re putting your best foot forward:

  1. Polishing your social channels to include clear and concise information about who you are and where potential customers can purchase your products.
  2. In all of your social media posting, tell a compelling story about you and your brand, highlighting what products and services you offer and inviting your customer to learn more about you.
  3. If you don’t already have an online shop, set one up! To keep things manageable, focus on curating your top selling items, or create special collections or kits that are easy to keep in stock and ship – you don’t have to list every single item you have in stock, at least while you’re just getting started.
  4. Ensure your website has a complete and effective “about us” page. Read our blog post on how to create an exceptional about us page

The bottom line: focusing on simple ways to increase your online traffic is always a good idea, especially in light of the current economic forecast and pandemic situation when customers are less active outside their homes.
